What is colloquial English?
It's the informal language of real conversations and social media, the way British people naturally speak with friends, colleagues and strangers. It has many different aspects, most of which textbooks never teach. Here are just a few examples.

And on top of this, there are the colloquial words, phrases and idioms themselves. Each one is clearly explained, then practised through speaking exercises, so you quickly feel confident using them.
And what about the culture?
Language only gets you halfway. British people often don't say exactly what they mean. When you understand what they are really saying, conversations become much easier and more enjoyable.
In your lessons, you choose how deep we go: from quick explanations of cultural context to in-depth discussions about how Britain works.

Every course is built around our own textbook and materials. Some students want pure colloquial English, others want more British culture, and some need extra help with grammar or pronunciation along the way. Whatever your goals, we shape the course around you.
Our largest course: a highly simplified version of the textbook plus a companion vocabulary and grammar book. Built on practical situations like cafés, shops, introductions and transport, with 10 to 15 high-frequency British expressions per lesson, so you use real colloquial English from day one.
A simplified version of the textbook: the same story and characters, adapted vocabulary and grammar, and 20 to 25 colloquial expressions per chapter. The bridge from functional English to natural conversation.
The signature course, built on the full textbook: 15 chapters, 30 to 40+ colloquial expressions per chapter, and deep cultural insight into British behaviour and communication.

A textbook that doesn't teach 'textbook English'.
Traditional textbooks are great at teaching formal, academic English, but they don't teach you how British people actually speak and behave. You won't find "beat around the bush" in them, and you won't learn why we apologise when someone bumps into us. Our textbook teaches you this, and much more.
Too many students can pass exams but can't connect naturally with native speakers. We searched for a resource that taught real British language and culture at the same time, but found nothing comprehensive. In the end, we decided to write it ourselves. It's the resource we always wished existed: colloquial expressions, natural conversation patterns and cultural knowledge, all in one place.
There are three versions of the textbook, one for each level: A2 to B1, B1 to B2, and B2+. Every version follows Alex, a French lawyer, through real British life. From a networking event to a pub, every chapter is written in the colloquial English British people actually use.
The B2+ textbook is currently being published.
It's not yet available to buy, but every student enrolled in our courses gets full access to the materials for their level.
Hello, I'm Luc.
I created My Cup of Tea English to help people connect naturally with the British.
As a tutor, I heard the same request again and again: I need to improve my English to connect better with British people. My students already had good formal English. What they were missing was colloquial English and cultural knowledge, so I created a course that teaches both.
A lover of languages
Born and raised in London, I studied English Language and Literature at the University of London, then qualified as a TESOL teacher.
Three years in Taiwan, by the end speaking entirely in Mandarin with my girlfriend and friends. Colloquial Mandarin helped me a lot to build relationships.
I teach colloquial English and British culture to students of all nationalities, and share free resources on Instagram.
