About the Founder / Author

I'm Luc Dyson, and I created My Cup of Tea English to help people connect more naturally with the British and have a deeper understanding of British culture. I used to be a specialist English tutor for Chinese and Taiwanese people living in Britain, and during this time I received a common request from students: I need to improve my English skills to have stronger connections with British colleagues, friends and acquaintances. I found these students often already had good formal, textbook English, and I realised they would never achieve their goals without a different approach β€” they needed to develop colloquial English skills and cultivate British cultural knowledge.

I can relate to the struggle of not being able to form close connections with native speakers from my own experience living in Taiwan for three years. While studying Mandarin intensively, I had strong formal language skills but felt a disconnect with locals. After experiencing this challenge from both sides β€” as student and teacher β€” it became obvious to me how important colloquial language skills and cultural knowledge are for connecting with native speakers and their culture.

Unfortunately, I have found there is a lack of resources for learning colloquial language skills, and cultural knowledge is often disregarded by language teachers. In fact, for learning colloquial English at levels B2 and above, there was no comprehensive language resource available until my textbook. It is now possible to properly train colloquial English skills through my textbook, which is used in the course, and which will soon be available for purchase.

Now, I teach colloquial English skills and British cultural knowledge to people from all nationalities both inside and outside of Britain. It is always a pleasure to help my students feel more confident and at home when surrounded by British people and British culture.

More About Me

I am a lover of languages. I studied English Language and Literature at the University of London, and Mandarin in ICLP intensive language school, obtaining a BA Honors degree and proficiency certificate in the process. I was born in London and lived there until I was 20, then I went on a study abroad year. I chose Taiwan and fell in love with the people, culture and language. I requested a break from my BA degree to enroll in an intensive Mandarin Language school. After 18 months of rapid progress, I began a relationship with a Taiwanese woman where we spoke exclusively in Mandarin. This experience demonstrated to me the power of learning languages β€” after 18 months, I was leading a new life in a new country, speaking the native language fluently, and with my native girlfriend speaking it exclusively. Clearly, languages can transform your life.

I then obtained a TESOL certificate and became a specialist English tutor for Chinese students, working both privately and for Sterna Education Consulting. During this time, I noticed a significant gap in learning resources β€” there was no comprehensive systematic language resource (textbook) for teaching colloquial English at B2 level and above. From my experience as both language teacher and language student, I knew there was a great demand for these skills. This inspired me to write 'My Cup of Tea English: Real British Language and Culture for B2+ Learners', which is currently being published. Since colloquial English is a gateway to engaging with British culture, I also included other key aspects of British culture in the textbook to deepen learners' engagement. My aim is to provide intermediate to advanced learners with all the linguistic and cultural tools they need to connect naturally and deeply with British people and their way of life.

After completing the textbook, I founded My Cup of Tea English and started offering my course. I'm now turning my attention to building the company's presence through Instagram and YouTube channels.
