What You'll Learn
π£οΈ Real British English (colloquial English)
You won't learn textbook phrases like "I am very tired" β you'll learn what British people actually say:
Everyday Expressions:
- "I'm knackered" (very tired)
- "I'm not fussed" (I don't mind)
- "Fair enough" (I accept that)
Colourful Idioms:
- "It's a piece of cake" (very easy)
- "Barking up the wrong tree" (pursuing the wrong solution)
- "Back to the drawing board" (start again from scratch)
- "Take a leaf out of your book" (learn from you)
Classic Sayings:
- "It's not my cup of tea" (not what I enjoy)
- "A stitch in time saves nine" (fix problems early)
Brilliant British Slang:
- "Chuffed" (pleased)
- "Faff" (waste time)
- "Dodgy" (suspicious/unreliable)
- "Gutted" (very disappointed)
British Culture π¬π§
Language without culture is just words. In the course, you'll learn about:
Popular Traditions:
- Pub culture
- Tea-drinking rituals
- Sunday roasts
- Going to the football
British Values:
- Politeness (sometimes too much)
- Modesty (showing off makes people uncomfortable)
- Stoicism (staying calm and not complaining)
The Humour:
- Sarcasm β saying the opposite of what you mean ("Great weather!" when it's raining)
- Self-deprecation β making fun of yourself ("I'm hopeless at cooking")
- Taking the piss β teasing someone in a friendly way ("Still can't park, can you?")
What People Say vs. What They Mean:
- "Quite good" = not great
- "Interesting" = I disagree
- "Not bad" = actually quite good
- "I'll bear that in mind" = I'm ignoring that
Cultural Knowledge:
- Political Events β Brexit, general elections, Scottish independence
- Historical Moments β World War II, the British Empire, Thatcher era
- Public Figures β The Royal Family, prime ministers, cultural icons like David Attenborough
- Literature, Music, TV, and Sport β Shakespeare, Harry Potter, The Beatles, Britpop, The Traitors, Love Island, Premier League, Wimbledon
From Observer to Participant π»
With these skills you won't just understand β you'll genuinely connect with British people.
You'll get the humour, know the unspoken rules, and speak naturally in any British social situation β whether that's with friends at the pub, colleagues at work, or strangers on the street.
Flexible Approach:
The course focuses more on colloquial English than culture, but we can adjust that balance β more language, more culture, or an equal mix of both. Every student is different. β
